Facial Balancing with Filler
Dr. Lee specializes in facial balancing, which is a technique which addresses the signs of aging in your face in a holistic and natural way utilizing hyaluronic acid filler. Traditionally filler has been used to treat specific problem areas that you may notice on your face as you get older - for example smile lines or thin lips. This approach of spot treating certain areas can often lead to unnatural, overdone, or underwhelming results. Facial balancing takes into account the face as a whole and makes you look refreshed, brighter, and lifted, while at the same time being completely undetectable.
Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler
Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is one of the most popular and versatile types of fillers in NYC. Juvederm® Ultra™, Juvederm® Ultra Plus™, Restylane®, Restylane® Defyne™, Restylane® Refyne™, Restylane® Kysse™ are all popular brand names of filler that you may have heard of. These fillers produce instant results if you’re looking to add volume to the undereyes, cheeks, jawline, lips, chin and other areas of the face.
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in the body which means it is unlikely for you to have an allergic reaction to the product. HA fillers are extremely versatile. You can use small amounts to create subtle enhancements, or larger amounts to address more significant signs of aging, while still looking like yourself. There is little to no downtime and the results are immediate. It’s a very cost-effective treatment option compared to plastic surgery.
Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid Fillers:
Restored volume
Improved skin texture
Decreased appearance of wrinkles and lines
Lasts from 6 months up to 2 years
Minimal pain and downtime
Reversible with hyaluronidase
Hyaluronic fillers are among the most requested fillers in NYC because they are natural looking, quick, effective, long lasting, and more affordable than surgical procedures.
What do Fillers Do
Fillers are great for softening lines, wrinkles, and restoring any area that has lost volume. Think about a beach ball that has lost air inside - the outside of the ball will start to sag and wrinkle. If you blow up the ball again it goes back to its original appearance. In this case the outside of the ball is your skin, and the inside is the fat and soft tissue that has been lost due to age.
HA fillers also stimulate your own skin to create new collagen and elastin. This means that it gives long term benefits in addition to the immediate effects. With time your skin will appear more supple, firm, and tight. Dermal fillers can enhance lip volume and hydration, provide contour to cheek bones and jawline and can also be used to reduce the appearance of dark circles.
What Areas can Filler Treat?
Dermal fillers are most commonly used in the face, but they can also be used in the hands and neck.
Choosing an experienced provider is important to ensure you end up with natural results that make you look refreshed rather than "done".
Fillers can be placed in:
Lips
Cheeks
Chin
Around the mouth
Jawline
Undereyes
Marionette lines
Temples
Nose
While we can treat specific areas of concern, we believe best results are achieved when the face is treated at as a whole. This may involve filler in multiple areas, but will ultimately give you a more balanced and natural look.
How Long do Fillers Last
There are many factors that determine how long fillers last. The rate at which your body breaks down the components, the type of filler used, and the location of the filler.
Generally fillers last about 9-12 months, but there are fillers than can last up to 2 years. The more mobile an area, typically the quicker the filler will go away. For example, lip filler tends to go away more quickly than cheek filler or temple filler.
The longevity of a filler also depends on the type of filler used. Within the Juvederm® and Restylane collections of fillers, there are several different variations of products that differ in thickness. Some last 6-9 months, and others like Juvederm® Voluma™ lasts up to 2 years. The type of filler used is best determined by your provider.

Who can Benefit from Fillers
Your body’s collagen production begins to slow at age 25, and after the age of 30, the collagen levels in your body drop by about 1-2% every year. Everyone experiences signs of aging at different ages, and at different rates.
Dermal filler can help anyone who is noticing signs of aging such as:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Thinning lips
Flattened or sagging cheeks
Increased prominence of nasolabial folds or smile lines
Hollow temples and more
These changes can make areas of the face appear more hollow or saggy. If you want to soften these signs of aging without something as permanent or invasive as plastic surgery you may be a good candidate for filler.
How Fillers Differ from Botox
Fillers and Botox are similar in that they are both non-invasive, injectable ways to reduce signs of aging. Unlike fillers, Botox can only be used for wrinkles caused by muscle movements which are typically found in the forehead, around the eyes, and the upper face. Botox is a neurotoxin that relaxes specific muscles, which makes those wrinkles appear to go away. Botox is a short-term treatment and typically lasts a few months.
Fillers on the other hand are primarily used to add volume to areas that need it. They also give us a tool to address fine lines and wrinkles in the lower face where Botox can cause unwanted complications. Fillers can augment lips, and even change the appearance of the nose and chin. These treatments are longer lasting than Botox with some lasting up to two years.
Risks of Fillers
The most common risks associated with dermal filler are swelling and bruising. Although we do our best to avoid bruising, sometimes it is inevitable and can take anywhere from a few days to occasionally up to 2 weeks to resolve. There is also a small risk of infection, allergy, or development of nodules or granulomas, although rare. One of the most serious side effects of filler is if it is inadvertently injected into an artery where it can cause a blockage. Thankfully, this is an extremely rare complication and can be managed if discovered early. Side effects from filler are typically short-term and hyaluronic acid fillers are able to be dissolved in case of any serious side effects.
The use of alcohol, blood thinners, or blood thinning supplements can lead to increased bruising. When possible it is best to avoid ibuprofen/motrin/advil or supplements such as Vitamin E, fish oil, gingko, or ginseng about 1 week prior to your procedure. Be sure to consult with your doctor before discontinuing any medications.
How much do fillers cost in NYC?
Our office charges anywhere from $450 - $800 per syringe of filler. If multiple syringes are needed, you may receive a lower per syringe price for the full treatment.
